The New Movement - the World Religions' Conference - owes its conception and
organization to the brilliant imagination & arduous zeal of the Jain Muni, Shri Sushil
Kumarji Bhasker.
In difficult times and conditions of linguistic movements in Maharashtra Muniji called
an All - languages' Conference to consider and to find ways and means for solving the
problem . But he realized that religious differences are the root cause for all such
problems . Therefore it was under his guidance that the first All Inter -Religions'
conference was held in Mumbai in 1954. Shri Morarji Desai, the then chief minister
inaugurated the session.
In a thought - provoking address, he said; "It is my firm belief that if the need for
Dharma is but necessary for the peace of soul, we must recognise the Oneness of all
religions, for the peace of the world."
In the Bombay Conference leaders of religious thought met together and laid down the
five fundamentals which can be regarded as the foundation for the World Conference
of All Religions. They are :
In the very next year - 1955 , Muniji had an opportunity to spend his monsoonish
weather at Ujjain.During his stay here, he found the place to be a great centre of
ancient Indian culture and hence very befitting for holding an All Inter - Religions'
Conference.
The Ujjain Conference lasted for three days from 26th to 28th November, 1955.
By its historical importance, Ujjain suited very well as the site for the Religious
Conference.
An All Inter - Religions' Conference was successfully held in February, 1956, in
Bhilwara, arranged by the provinces of the Madhya Bharat and Rajasthan. It was
here that about 40,000 men and women pledged themselves to develop a wide outlook
towards all religions.
These All Inter - Religions' Conferences held under the sponsorship of Muniji at
Bombay, Ujjain and Bhilwara paved the way for the successive World Conferences of
All Religions held from time to time.
